Interior design was an important part of Le Corbusier's architecture. For him, the colouring of a house had the same importance as the floor plan and the structural design. Based on his experience, Le Corbusier developed an incomparable colour theory: architectural polychromy. Polychromy refers to colouration of buildings, artworks, sculpture, etc. Le Corbusier's chromatic vision is divided into two collections. The 1931 collection includes 43 colours in 14 series. These series consist of solid colours with graded brightness. The second collection followed in 1959 featuring 20 colours that are much stronger and more dynamic. Together, the two collections form the basis of Le Corbusier's chromatic vision. The 63 colours are all colours found in nature that radiate harmony in any combination. The colours of the nine colour groups white, grey & black, blue, green, ochre & yellow, orange, red, ochre & brown and umber offer a tool for skilful, impressive and comprehensive architectural colour concepts.
